KNOW BEFORE VISITING FLAMINGO BEACH IN ARUBA

So, are there flamingos in Aruba? Yes! But, the first thing you should know before you book your trip to Aruba is that flamingos are not native to the island, and you will not see any of them roaming around the main island at any time. Before our trip to Aruba, I thought that the island was all about the pink flamingos and that they would be seen everywhere. After all, everyone has a famous picture with flamingos, right?

Nothing could be further from the truth. It took me a lot of time and a lot of research to figure out how to actually get to the Aruba Flamingo Beach, so we have put together this complete guide so you can save a lot of time and actually enjoy your vacation!

If you want to stay connected in Aruba you can use the Airalo App, which lets you purchase a temporary eSIM mobile data plan when traveling abroad. It’s a great way to make sure you’ll always have access to the internet when you need it. I have checked the current Airalo prices and found that you can get only one data plan in Aruba: a 1GB plan for $9.50.

WHERE TO SEE FLAMINGOS IN ARUBA?

In order to see the flamingos, you have to visit the private island, the Renaissance Island, which is the private property of the Renaissance Aruba Resort, operated by Marriott.

You can also see flamingos on the de Palm Island in Aruba, but they are often behind a fence and not as pink as the ones on the Renaissance Island. Many people have mentioned not being able to hang out with the flamingos on the de Palm Island in Aruba or that the flamingos were simply not there, so it is truly a 50/50 if you will be able to hang out with them there or not. We didn’t want to risk it and, as a result, we have created this complete guide on how to visit the famous Flamingo Beach in Aruba.

Flamingo Island in Aruba

⚠️ There are only three ways to get to Flamingo Island in Aruba: ⚠️

#1 BOOK THE HOTEL ROOM AT THE RENAISSANCE RESORT

The first way, which is probably the easiest but also the most expensive, is to stay at the Renaissance Wind Creek Aruba Resort. The cheapest option starts at about $330 per night, including taxes, and gives you access to Flamingo Island for the entire duration of your stay.

The most important question we had when we were considering booking a room at the Renaissance Aruba Resort was: Can I visit Flamingo Beach before I check in to the Renaissance Hotel?

The answer is “YES!” I called the hotel ahead of time and was told that we would be able to visit the Flamingo Beach in Aruba any time between 7 AM and 7 PM, either before we check in or after we check out, and they would be happy to hold our bags while we enjoy the Flamingo Island.

If you want to spend more than one day enjoying the Flamingo Beach and the Iguana Beach at Renaissance Island, the price of a room for one night might actually be a great deal. Especially for two people. However, if you are on a tight schedule and want to see more of what Aruba has to offer, I think one day on the Flamingo Island should be more than enough. And believe me when I say that Aruba has so much more to offer.

A quick disclaimer, and something we were completely unaware of before visiting Aruba, is that the Renaissance Wind Creek Aruba Resort is actually located on the main island, not on the private Renaissance Island. So, even if you book a hotel room, you will still have to take the boat every day to visit the Flamingo Beach in Aruba and leave by 7 PM.

#2 BOOK THE RENAISSANCE ISLAND SPA COVE TREATMENT

The second way, which is still pricey but a bit cheaper than booking a hotel room, is to book a spa treatment through the Renaissance Aruba Resort. However, this cannot be just any spa treatment. The treatment HAS TO be booked through the Island Spa Cove on Aruba’s Renaissance Island. Otherwise, you may have just gotten yourself a nice, refreshing facial without the possibility to visit the Flamingo Beach. You definitely don’t want to make that mistake.

Flamingo Island in Aruba

Booking the Island Spa Cove will cost you around $160 for one person or $295 for two people. Also, there is an extra charge of $25 per person if you are not a guest at the Renaissance Hotel. Oh, and don’t forget the tips. But on the bright side, the price includes a towel and one frozen drink, which may be a sweet deal for some.

Blockquote Example

Tip: We tried to book the Island Spa Cove treatment about three weeks before our trip to Aruba, but they were already fully sold out for the entire month (even in October, which is considered a slower season), so keep that in mind as the spots may go pretty fast.

#3 PURCHASE RENEISSANCE ISLAND ARUBA DAY PASS

The third way, which is definitely the most confusing but also the most affordable way to get to the Flamingo Beach in Aruba, is to purchase the Renaissance Aruba Day Pass. Now, don’t just go to their website. Read what I’m about to say first, because if you don’t, you’re setting yourself up for failure (I’d know. I’ve been there).

This option will cost you $125 per person and includes one drink and a meal. It also includes a boat ride to the Flamingo Beach, a towel and all of the water sports equipment like paddle boards, snorkeling gear, and kayaks… at least supposedly—keep on reading.

IMPORTANT: The Renaissance Island Day Passes aren’t always available. The website doesn’t say when or IF the passes will be available, and there is a lot of different information on how to get them all over the internet. The most popular information that you will find, which is no longer true, is that they open the day pass sales at 6 AM every day and sell them only for the following day. And, even though this might have been true in the past, you may disregard this information, at least for now.

We visited back in October 2022, and the Flamingo Beach Aruba Day Pass sales would open every Saturday, early in the morning, at 9 AM and they would sell them for the entire following week. This, however, could change at any time without notice.

What I would recommend you do is:

1. Check the website at 6 AM Aruba time, or 9 AM on Saturday, to see if any spots are available. (However, one time, the resort would open the day pass sales at around 10 AM with the explanation that management was busy at the moment. Don’t forget that they’re still on island time, so don’t expect things to always be right on the dot) or;

2. Simply call the Renaissance Resort and ask them how and IF they are currently selling the day passes to the Flamingo Beach. This will save you a lot of time, especially since the resort stops any sales of day passes when the hotel is at full capacity. Also, make sure to call the actual Renaissance Hotel in Aruba, not the toll-free number, because only the one in Aruba will know the answer to your question. Keep in mind that this may add some international calling charges to your phone bill.

IS THE FLAMINGO BEACH IN ARUBA WORTH IT?

Now, is the Flamingo Beach in Aruba worth it? The short answer is, “absolutely!” We used the Renaissance Island Day Pass to get access to the Flamingo Island, and honestly, being able to spend the whole day on the beach with the pink flamingos was truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

The price of the day passes also included dinner and a drink. There was only one thing that was a bit odd and disappointing, though. We were supposed to have full access to the kayaks, paddle boards, and snorkeling gear, but once we arrived at the flamingo island, we were notified that all of the equipment was broken and out of service. This made us unable to use any of the promised water sports equipment. A bit odd, in my opinion.

The Flamingo Beach in Aruba may be worth the high price of $125 per person if all of the advertised equipment was in service. However, hanging out with the flamingos was definitely an absolutely amazing, once-in-a-lifetime experience that we would recommend to anyone who is still on a fence.

MUST KNOW BEFORE VISITING THE FLAMINGO BEACH IN ARUBA

1. The first boat to the Renaissance Island leaves at 7 AM and every 15 minutes after that, and the last boat to take you back to the main island leaves at 7 PM.

2. You can’t visit Flamingo Beach without using one of the three ways listed above.

3. There are two beaches on Renaissance Island: Flamingo Beach and Iguana Beach. Flamingo Beach is an adult-only beach, where kids have access to this beach under strict supervision and only from 9 AM to 10 AM. Iguana Beach is a family-friendly beach.

4. Flamingos can be fed dry food that you can purchase from the machines located on the pier (don’t forget to bring quarters!). You are not allowed to feed them any other kind of food.

5. You are not allowed to bring any outside food, drinks, speakers, or drones to the Flamingo Beach in Aruba.

6. Before getting on the boat taxi using a day pass, you will be required to show the confirmation email or the QR code provided during your booking. Make sure you have both ready.

7. Face masks are no longer required on the boat taxi.

8. Touching, chasing, or trying to scare the flamingos in any way is strictly prohibited, and you will be escorted off the island if there is any sign that the flamingos are being mistreated.

WERE THE FLAMINGOS IN ARUBA CAPTURED FROM THE WILD?

Another thing you should know about the Aruba flamingos is that they are not native to Aruba but are native to nearby islands such as Bonaire. They are undeniably a tourist trap, but they were bought out of a zoo and thankfully not removed from the wild.

⚠️ Their wings were clipped to keep them safe because they would not be able to survive in the wild if they were to fly away. ⚠️

From my personal experience, flamingos don’t seem to be bothered by people; they are free to walk around the island, and they actually seem to enjoy the attention the visitors give them. If the island staff notices any mistreatment of the flamingos, the person is immediately escorted off the island.

When the island closes and the last boat with workers leaves at 7 PM, you can see the flamingos just walking around and enjoying the entire island. They are not being caged or put away, and they get to enjoy the rest of the day without anyone around.

Insider Tips for an Unforgettable Trip

We’ve got some handy tips and personal experiences to share, so you can have the best time ever on this beautiful Caribbean island. Let’s get started!

▸ Snagging Those Cheap Flights

When booking flights, we always use websites like SkyscannerGoogle Flights, or Expedia to find the best deals. Set up price alerts and be flexible with your travel dates—you never know when a sweet bargain will pop up!

Pro tip: booking in advance and flying mid-week can save you some serious cash.

▸ Finding the Perfect Place to Stay

Aruba offers a wide range of accommodations, from luxurious resorts and boutique hotels to budget-friendly hostels. Here are some of our favorites:

1. Ultimate Luxury: The Ritz-Carlton, Aruba
2. Boutique Charm: Boardwalk Boutique Hotel Aruba
3. Budget-Friendly: Hostel Room Aruba

We usually book our stays through Booking.com to score the best deals and avoid any booking hassles.

▸ Don’t Forget Travel Insurance

We never leave home without travel insurance—it’s a lifesaver! Trust us, you’ll have peace of mind knowing you’re covered in case of any unexpected hiccups, like medical emergencies or lost luggage. We personally recommend Allianz Travel Insurance or a more budget-friendly option, SafetyWing for top-notch coverage.

▸ Getting Around Town

Aruba offers various transportation options, including buses, taxis, trolleys, and rental cars. We highly recommend renting a car, as it’s the most convenient way to explore the island at your own pace. Although buses are affordable, they might not provide the flexibility you need. Trolleys offer a fun way to see the island, but they are limited in their routes. For safety and convenience, consider using taxis for short trips, especially at night.

▸ Packing Must-Haves

Aruba’s sunny weather calls for sunscreenbug repellent, and light, breathable clothes. And don’t forget a reusable water bottle, a portable charger, and a trusty travel adapter! Oh, and always pack copies of your important travel docs—you never know when you might need them.

▸ Learn Some Basic Papiamento

While English is widely spoken in Aruba, locals will appreciate your effort to learn a few basic phrases in Papiamento, the island’s native language. We recommend having a language app or pocket-sized phrasebook handy for quick reference.

▸ Stay Connected

Upon arrival, consider purchasing a local SIM card to stay connected during your trip. SETAR and Digicel are popular options for coverage and affordable data plans. Another option is giving the Airalo app a try—it offers eSIM data plans for easy and convenient internet access in more than 190 countries, including Aruba.

▸ Join a Guided Tour

To truly appreciate Aruba’s rich history and culture, consider joining a guided tour. Local guides provide invaluable insider information and captivating stories. We’ve found fantastic tours on Viator—check them out!

▸ Stay Safe and in the Know

Keep safety at the forefront of your mind. Stay updated on local news, weather, and travel advisories. Register with your country’s embassy in Aruba to receive important alerts and assistance in case of emergencies.

▸ Embrace Aruba’s Local Culture

Don’t just be a tourist—embrace Aruba’s vibrant culture by attending local events, sampling regional cuisine, and engaging with residents. The most memorable travel experiences come from stepping out of your comfort zone and embracing new adventures.”
